3 Best Dog Toys for Aggressive Chewers
Why does my dog destroy toys?
You might ask yourself, "Why is my dog surgically taking apart every toy I buy for him?" Well, the reasons vary a lot, but it is often due to instinct, anxiety, or boredom.
Your dog's instinct might kick in whenever they see a toy. Dogs have been trained to hunt for hundreds of years, which is why they view toys as prey and feel the urge to destroy them.
If your dog feels anxious, they might develop a nervous habit. Humans tend to develop unhealthy habits, such as biting finger nails or scratching, when we feel nervous. Often, dogs experience separation anxiety when their owner is absent, leading them to destroy toys or, in the worst-case scenario, furniture.
Some dogs easily become bored and require more mental stimulation. In such cases, you'll want to provide a toy that can withstand their urge to destroy. If that toy falls apart during their initial attempt, they will likely turn their attention to your shoes next.
Which toys are the best?
If you've landed on this website, it's likely that your dog is an aggressive chewer, which means you've probably gone through more toys than you can count. Here are my top 3 favorite dog toys for aggressive chewers:
1. Chuck-It Balls
Over the past 8 years, I've purchased various toys for my dog, Luke, but only a few have survived for more than a day. Chuck-It balls, in particular, have proven to be highly durable for dogs that enjoy playing and chewing on balls. Unlike traditional tennis balls, which can wear down your dog's teeth, Chuck-It balls serve as an excellent alternative.
2. Heavy-Duty Ropes
If your dog is more a tug-and-way type of dog, these heavy duty ropes are a must-have. They are super resistant and hold up for years. I got a large one for my medium size dog because it gives us more room to play rough. Mine is a little worn now but it still holds up very good. I also love that they are made from 100% cotton.
3. Indestructible Squeaky Toy
And now this is my absolute favorite toy. My dog has an obsession with squeaky toys. For years I’ve been buying stuffed, squeaky animals for him that literally lasted about 3 minutes before the stuffing was all over the floor. So if your dog loves squeaky toys, this is IT. I liked this toy so much that I bought it in different sizes and shapes. All of them still work, they are a little chewed up but overall in great shape. I bought this one 2.5 years ago and it still works. Love it. Definitely a must-have if your dog loves squeaky toys.
The chuck-it balls, a good rope and a squeaky toy are a good selection of toys that will last you forever. Be sure to always supervise your dog, when he or she interacts with toys.
Pro-Tip: If your dog gets tired of toys easily, try to rotate his toys. This means to put away a couple of his toys and then switch them out every week.
Happy Chewing!
