5 Types of Playtime
Every dog likes to play. There are many different types of games and your dog might prefer one over the other. Playing with your dog does not only grow your bond, but also stimulates mental and physical needs of your dog. That is why you can find 5 different types of play below.
1.Playing Rough/ Wrestling
This game can look a little too rough sometimes. Play-fight is a fun game for dogs. When two dogs are munching on each others legs and pinning each other down, it often looks like a real fight. Which is why you need to keep an eye on the dogs to ensure the game stays friendly. It is easy to get a little too rowdy, resulting in a real fight.
Some dogs really love the rough play and you can engage by gently pushing your dog back and forth. You will see him/her coming back at you, trying to play.
2.Chewing
Chewing is an essential occupation for dogs. It is a a very stimulating mental entertainment. Some dogs can chew on toys or bones for hours. Chewing is an activity that can distract your dog for a long period of time.
You can engage the chewing by hiding a treat inside the toy. If you do not have a toy on hand that has an opening, try to roll a few treats inside a towel and let your dog find it.
3.Chasing Games
Whenever you go to a dog park, you might have seen your dog running around and being joined by other dogs that are trying to chase him/her. It is a common game among dogs and very entertaining. It is a great exercise for them and they could go on forever.
Even if there are no other dogs around, you can engage a racing game by running around in the house or outside in the yard. Your dog is most likely to join you for the fun.
4.Tug-of-War
This game is one of my dogs’ favorite. He loves to bring me toys to play tug-of-war with me. This game can be played with a toy, a stick, rope or anything, really. Either party pulls on the toy as hard as they can, trying to not let go of it.
Dogs have a natural prey instinct which is stimulated by this game. This game can get a little rough sometimes so make sure your dog can release the toy on command.
5. Playing Fetch
This game is fun if your dog actually knows how to bring back whatever toy you just threw. Nobody wants to continuously pick up the ball you just threw to the other side of the yard, just to throw it again.
I do not know how my dog figured it out but when I first got him he never brought me back the toy. After a year or so, he finally noticed that if he brings back the toy I just threw, the game will continue. Now he LOVES to play fetch.
You can throw balls, frisbees, a stick or anything that can be thrown. This is a great way to tire your dog out and to have a little fun together.
I know life can get busy, but no matter which game your dog prefers, you should always make a little time and room for a game.
Happy Playtime!
